MATERIAL EXPLORATIONS
A Waste Aesthetic
This project adopts the popular design approach to materiality of reflecting the local landscape. However it also aims to go a step further by integrating the materiality of the project in existing systems of material production. Specifically it aims to provide a new place for what is currently being treated as waste material in the local area. This conscious decision to make 'waste' visible - as the project's aesthetic - is founded in the hope of inspiring greater sustainability with greater awareness around the true life cycle of materials and their carbon footprint.
Mycelium
This diagram displays the use of mycelium as a key material in the project - involving the local whiskey industry in the production of the material and creating a circular, renewable use of the material across the site.

‘Laying hedges as field boundaries using a rich variety of tree and shrub species would, in the not so distant past, have served the additional purpose of providing livestock with an extra source of nutrition and opportunities for self-medication’
